Here you will find a list of affiliate events happening during the month of May 2021! Many of these events involve current or former TCAF guests, exhibitors, institutions, and friends of the festival. Don’t miss out on any of these amazing opportunities to engage with the broader comic arts community in the comfort of your own home!

FOREST FOLK: The Comic Strip Art Of Dax Gordine

When: May 7 – June 18, 2021

Where: RAID Gallery, 1720 Queen Street West, Toronto

Forest Folk: The Comic Strip Art of Dax Gordine premieres at the RAID Gallery on Friday, May 7th. 2021 in conjunction with TCAF, who we are proud to partner with for this offsite event, and runs till June 18th.
Patrons visiting the exhibit during TCAF’s week-long celebration of the comic arts will be treated to an exclusive limited edition print while supplies last.
The exhibition will also feature selected works by creators paying homage to the quirky cast of Forest Folk. Tribute artists include Ramón K. Pérez, Joverine, Eric Vedder, Michelle Vucko, Danesh Mohiuddin, and many more.

 

 

2021 Doug Wright Awards

When: May 8 2021, 8PM EST

The 2021 Doug Wright Awards will be broadcast as a pre-recorded livestream, on Facebook and YouTube, on Saturday, May 8th, at 8 p.m. ET, hosted by Don McKellar.

Alison Bechdel – The Secret to Superhuman Strength

When: May 13 2021, 8PM-9:30PM EDT

Where: Online, via Zoom

Bestselling cartoonist Alison Bechdel launches her newest graphic memoir, THE SECRET TO SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH, in this exclusive Canadian event presented by Librairie D+Q and The Beguiling. Alison will guide the audience through a visual presentation, followed by an audience Q+A hosted by fellow cartoonist and friend Sophie Yanow (THE CONTRADICTIONS).

CCOL TCAF Mini Comics Read Aloud

When: May 14th, 5PM EDT

Where: Online, via Zoom

On May 14th at 5pm EST, Join artists Robert Liu-Trujillo @robert_tres, Duachaka Her @duachakaher , and Nina Slykhuis-Landry @nina_drewww for a live event of mini comics readings with the Canada Comics Open Library! Each artist will perform a selection from their comics and then there will be a Q&A with the audience. Stay tuned for more info about creators taking part over the next week!

Zines & Power: Resisting Algorithmic Culture

When: May 16th, 1PM – 2:30PM EDT

Explore how zines have served as sites of resistance and opportunities to creatively engage community in conversations about power with host Maxine Kozak.

This program is part of Goethe-Institut Toronto‘s Algorithmic Culture series.

European Comics: A Female Perspective

When: Friday, May 21st, 12:30PM EDT

Where: Online, via Zoom (register here)

Female creators from across Europe will share their thoughts and experience in making comics in their respective countries. What have been the challenges in their work, has anything changed in recent years and what are their hopes for the future? They will also share how everyday life inspires many of their professional projects and how the comics medium helps them convey these stories.

These and other topics will be discussed with Kaisa Leka (Finland), Johanna Maierski (Germany), Ingrid Chabbert (France), Judith Vanistendael (Belgium) and Luciana Cimino (Italy).

Moderated by Dr. Lucia Cedeira Serantes (Assistant professor, The University of Western Ontario).

This event is co-organised by the French Embassy in Canada, The Goethe Institue of Toronto, Embassy of Finland in Canada, Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto & Europe Comics.
