The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is happy to announce an official Festival Exchange with Art Bubble – The Danish International Comics Arts Festival!

This will take place between TCAF 2018 this May and Art Bubble 2018 in September! Founded by documentary film maker, artist, and cartoonist Lars Jakobsen in 2012, Art Bubble seeks to create a meeting place for Danish comics fans, and to promote Danish comics creators at home and abroad. For the first portion of the the exchange, TCAF and Art Bubble will team to create a Danish Pavilion, located in on the second floor of TCAF’s primary exhibitor venue Toronto Reference Library, in the Appel Salon’s Novella Room. The Pavilion will feature live drawing throughout the weekend and a variety of Danish comics will be on display to browse. In addition, TCAF and the Danish Pavilion will welcome a dynamic variety of Danish comics creators including:

Tatiana Goldberg (Kijara). Tatiana Goldberg has a knack for telling chilling tales. Her most recent work, Kijara, is a sci-fi story set in a future where genemanipulation has gone awry.

Tom Kristensen (Martin). Tom Kristensen’s story of Martin Luther, catalyst of the Protestant Reformation earned him the Claus Deleuran comics industry award for best Danish artist in 2018.

Palle Schmidt (Thomas Alsop). Palle Schmidt brought the city of New York to life in Chris Mieskewicz’ tale about the Alsop family, whose lives and fate are intertwined with that of Manhattan island itself, published in English by BOOM! Studios.

Karoline Stjernfelt (Tomorrow will be better). Karoline Stjernfelt blew everyone out the water in 2015, when her book Tomorrow will be better – the story of King Christian VII and his mental illness – brought her the Claus Deleuran comics industry award for best debut.

Jacob Thybo (Arminius). Jacob Thybo was nominated for the Claus Deleuran industry award in 2018 for his debut Arminius – the story of a Germanic hostage turned Roman general, who in 9 AD struck a decisive blow against the Romans and their plans to rule the known world.

The Danish Pavilion will be supported by Art Bubble administrator Arni Beck Gunnarsson, and administrator and Ganske Vist cartoonist Lars Jakobsen. For full biographic details check out the Danish Pavilion official guest listing.

These creators will be featured in a special Danish Comics spotlight panel to take place as part of the official TCAF panel programming. Check the schedule closer to the Festival date.

This exchange follows a number of Festival exchanges in which TCAF has participated over the past few years, as it seeks to fulfill its mandate to promote Canadian cartooning abroad, and invite the world to experience all that Canadian Comics has to offer. TCAF will complete the exchange by leading a contingent of Canadian cartoonists to Denmark this September, with more information to come.
